EYEBROW TATTOO

Semi-permanent makeup can create or redefine the shape of brows, fill in empty/sparse areas, thicken, extend, and create brows for clients who have lost all their brow hair. Those who are unfamiliar with these services usually refer to them as eyebrow tattoos.

MICROBLADING

Also known as Brow Embroidery or Feather Stroking, is a form of semi-permanent makeup application where hair strokes are manually drawn into the eyebrows. Pigment is implanted into the surface layer of the dermis (skin) and will typically last from 1-3 years. Not recommended for very oily skin types as hair strokes will eventually blend together over time. To learn more, see our guide to microblading

We currently have a Calgary Microblading offer for all Calgarians!

NANO BROWS

Hair stokes done with a machine rather than hand tool, to implant the pigment more consistently in the eyebrow skin, for longer lasting results.

POWDER BROWS

Also known as  Airbrushed Brows, Stardust Brows or Borderless Brows, uses a digital machine to implant pigment into the skin that gives a soft powdery makeup look. Great for oily or aging skin types or those with little of their own natural hair. Results can be customized to be soft and lightly saturated or to more of a solid, defined look. This eyebrow treatment typically lasts longer than microblading at 2-5 years.

OMBRE BROWS

Similar to powder brows, but in a gradient fashion - darker at the tails to progressively lighter towards the head of the eyebrow.

COMBO BROWS

Also known as 3D/4D Brows or Hybrid Brows - Incorporates both methods of hair strokes and shading to create the most defined look. Technique can be performed by hand or with a digital machine.

TOUCHUP (from another artist)

This technique is applicable for clients that have had prior brow/tattoo pigmentation done (from another artist) and need refreshing or correction of their shape and/or color. Depending on the saturation of previous work done, some limitations may apply, or removal may be warranted first. Please inquire and send close up photos of your brows to info@candidcosmedics.com so we can advise further.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW LONG DO RESULTS LAST?

Semi permanent pigments will fade over time naturally. Many different factors affect the life of the implanted pigment, such as color choice, lifestyle, sun exposure, skin type, hormones, medications and immediate and long term aftercare. Results typically last 1-5 years, but most clients will prefer a touch-up every 1-2 years to refresh the color and shape of the eyebrows. Oilier skin types tend to fade quicker than drier skin types. Frequent smokers or those with iron deficiency anemia may have results fade sooner. Results vary with each client.

WHAT WILL THE FINAL RESULT LOOK LIKE?

Hairstrokes work best for clients with dry to normal skin types. Hairstrokes on oiler skin types tend to heal softer and more blended. Clients with more natural existing hair will have more of a 3D look, whereas clients with less hair, will have more of a 2 dimensional look. Our goal is to achieve the most natural looking brow that compliments your face, regardless.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING THE EYEBROW TREATMENT?

An in depth consultation where expectations are discussed, facial measurements are taken, colors are determined, and a removable drawing of what your brows will look like is performed for your approval before the tattooing procedure. The procedure can be performed the same day of the consultation. We allow enough time to complete paperwork, take before/after photos, 15-20 minutes of topical numbing, the procedure, and finally a review of aftercare.

WILL NATURAL EYEBROW HAIRS BE REMOVED?

We incorporate as much of your natural eyebrow hair as possible. Any strays that lay outside of the eyebrow design will be removed.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR MY EYEBROW TREATMENT?

  • It is recommended to plan any vacations a minimum of 14 days after the procedure.

  • If you have an ideal shape and color in mind, bring a few reference photos to your appointment. You may fill in your eyebrows as you normally would so we can take into consideration the shape you desire.

  • Do not consume alcohol, caffeine or blood thinners (Aspirin, Ibuprofen, other NSAID medication, fish oil, niacin, vitamin E) 48 hours before your procedure, to avoid excess bleeding, which directly affects color retention.

  • Avoid sun/ tanning bed exposure for 30 days BEFORE and AFTER your procedure. As your skin exfoliates from a sunburn, it will take the tattoo pigment with it. If you show up for your appointment with a new tan or a sunburn, you will need to reschedule and will forfeit your deposit.

  • Vaccines/Immunizations - please ensure your cosmetic tattoo appointment is scheduled a minimum of 14 days either BEFORE or AFTER to avoid any potential immune reactions.

  • Some cosmetic procedures should be completed prior to your brow tattoo:
    - Brow waxing/shaping (48 hours in advance)
    - Brow tinting (1 week in advance)

    Botox/fillers (4 weeks in advance)
    Facials (48 hours in advance)
    - Facial laser treatments, chemical peels, microneedling (4 weeks in advance)

    - Skin products containing Vitamin A or Retinol and AHA on the brow area (2 weeks in advance)

WHO IS NOT A CANDIDATE FOR EYEBROW TATTOOS?

  • Under the age of 18 years

  • Pregnant or nursing

  • Diabetic on the needle (will require doctor’s clearance)

  • Have an autoimmune disease (will require doctor’s clearance)

  • On blood thinners

  • Have epilepsy

  • Have infections (localized to the area or systemic) and/or diseases or are sick (cold/flu)

Brow Tattoo: FAQ

ARE EYEBROW TATTOOS PAINFUL?

Levels of discomfort vary upon each individual’s pain threshold and sensitivity, but the sensation can be compared to tweezing of the eyebrows or a light scratching. To ensure maximum comfort during the procedure, a topical anesthetic (4-5% Lidocaine) will be applied before and during your treatment. Please note, if you are on your menstrual cycle you may be more sensitive to pain. Sleep, stress and caffeine can also play a factor in pain sensitivity.

WHAT IS THE TATTOO HEALING PROCESS?

Generally, no time off work is needed for healing as mild redness and swelling immediately after the procedure will subside within 24 hours. Healing time is approximately 10- 14 days for the top layers of skin. Initially after the procedure, brows will be much darker, more saturated and thicker than what the final result will be once fully healed; it is important to understand that brows will become 10-15% thinner and up to 40% lighter. Between 4-6 weeks, the area and deeper layers of the skin will be fully healed and reveal its true shape and color. There can be some minor patchiness in healing between your first and second appointment - this is the purpose of your touch up or "perfecting" appointment, which can be booked 4-8 weeks after the initial treatment. In some cases, clients may need a third appointment to achieve their desired result.

WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER THE EYEBROW PROCEDURE?

Aftercare involves not touching your brows (picking, scratching, pulling) while they are healing and potentially scabbing/flaking the first 7-10 days. Avoidance of excessive sun exposure, water, perspiration (working out), skin care products, makeup and exfoliation to the area is important so pigment and healing are not disturbed. Detailed aftercare instructions will be given on the day of the appointment, as well as an aftercare kit with specific healing ointment to maintain the health and longevity of your new brows.

WHAT PIGMENTS & TOOLS DO YOU USE?

We use both organic and synthetic pigments deemed safe for the skin; they are stable, high performance pigments that undergo rigorous testing for carcinogenic compounds, unsafe dyes/colorants, heavy metals and microbiological sterility. We do not use pigments made in China. We only use sterile, single use needles that are opened in front of you. We are Alberta Health Services inspected.
